The company reported ₹42.8 crore in cost savings and 34,336 man-days reclaimed in FY26 from AI-led initiatives and states it is working on over 25 high-impact AI use cases (from an initial pool of 250+ ideas), now scaled to over 15,000 users.
AI is now a major, strategic theme for Lupin and it's tracked at the Board level, with the Risk Management Committee reviewing "emerging areas such as AI" as part of enterprise risk oversight. The company reported ₹42.8 crore in cost savings and 34,336 man-days reclaimed in FY26 from AI-led initiatives and states it is working on over 25 high-impact AI use cases (from an initial pool of 250+ ideas), now scaled to over 15,000 users.
Major AI, Digital Initiatives and Benefits in FY26
The company has built an 'Enterprise GenAI Platform' with reusable services, modular architecture and LLM orchestration, operated through an "Enterprise AI Operating System" resting on six pillars (AI Governance, AI Fluency, Risk Management, AI Command Center, Portfolio Management, AI Platform). Concrete 'agentic AI' tools have been built for field teams, a Quality Documentation Co-Author for SOP/compliance authoring; a Manufacturing and Maintenance Insights Hub; a Supply Chain Insights Hub; and an 'OOS Navigator' for out-of-specification investigations.
Other AI applications include an AI assistant embedded in its SmartRep digital sales platform. It has resolved 12,500+ internal queries at 99.5% resolution; An AI-powered patient/healthcare-professional engagement assistant reaching 629,000+ users across 16 therapy areas in 20 Indian languages; AI-based tool for SOP management, an AI/ML-based predictive quality analytics model for manufacturing, and an AI-enabled breast cancer screening initiative with Niramai (2,000+ women screened in FY26).
The company also states it has established 'a robust AI policy and governance framework' covering data privacy, bias mitigation, transparency and human oversight, and frames AI capability-building as a talent priority under the banner "Know AI. Use AI. Lead with AI."
Embedding AI and Automation Across the Organization
Ramesh Swaminathan, Executive Director, Global CFO, Head of IT and API Plus SBU, Lupin, speaking exclusively with Financial Express Futech attributed the "₹428 million in savings and 34,336 man-days reclaimed, not just to a single initiative, but to the cumulative impact of embedding AI and automation across the organization."
He added, "More importantly, these investments (in AI and digital) are strengthening decision-making, improving quality and compliance, and creating a foundation for sustained productivity gains in the years ahead."
In FY26, Lupin continued to scale AI, advanced analytics, IoT, and automation across operations, commercial functions, manufacturing, quality, and patient engagement to drive greater efficiency, enhance productivity and improve outcomes.
Major Gains from Automation and RPA
Some of the largest gains came from automation and RPA-enabled workflows that streamlined repetitive tasks, reduced manual documentation, accelerated information retrieval, improved field-force planning, and enabled earlier intervention in manufacturing and quality processes. "By automating routine activities, we were able to improve speed, consistency, and operational effectiveness while allowing employees to focus on higher-value work," said Swaminathan.
In commercial operations, here's how each platform's benefit have been mapped to its beneficiary group:
| Platform | Beneficiary | Nature of Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Lupin Connect, DigiEngage, GP Konnect | Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) | Enabled 10 million+ interactions with 110,000+ HCPs — expanding engagement and outreach. |
| SmartRep | Sales Representatives / Field Force. | Digital sales platform adopted by 11,000+ active users (93%+ adoption) — supports planning, analytics, and knowledge management for the field team |
| Sahayak (AI assistant within SmartRep) | Sales Representatives / Internal Employees. | Resolved 12,500+ internal queries at 99.5% resolution — improves internal responsiveness and operational efficiency for the sales force. |
| Smart Buddy | Sales Representatives | Freed up rep time from routine tasks to focus on high-value customer engagement, and enabled faster, better-informed decision-making. |
| Anya | Patients (and broader Healthcare Engagement) | Reached 629,000+ users across 16 therapy areas and 20 Indian languages — expanding patient education and healthcare engagement at scale. |
The value creation for the Manufacturing and Quality Control is as below:
| Solution/Initiative | Beneficiary | Nature of Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| AI/ML-powered predictive quality models | Manufacturing & Quality Teams | Real-time identification of potential risks, enabling preventive/corrective action before issues escalate into batch failures or quality breaches. |
| Quality Prism | Quality Control (QC) Function / Quality Personnel | Automated quality workflows, reducing manual intervention and freeing staff from repetitive administrative tasks. |
| QC Digital Maturity (~85%) | QC Function (organization-wide) | Reflects overall digitization progress — improved consistency, traceability, and reliability of quality operations. |
Plans Over the Next Two Years
As Lupin moves from individual AI use cases to broader enterprise adoption, specific functions are now seeing the strongest AI-led transformation. They are projected to translate into measurable business outcomes for Lupin over the next 12–24 months.
"As we move from individual AI applications to broader enterprise adoption, the strongest transformation is currently taking place across our Quality and Manufacturing operations, as well as our Commercial ecosystem. More broadly, technology is becoming an increasingly important enabler across the value chain, with investments in digital manufacturing, advanced analytics and AI helping us improve speed, consistency and the quality of decision-making," said Swaminathan.
In Manufacturing and Quality, "we are moving from a traditional, reactive model to a more predictive and proactive operating model. By combining machine-learning-based predictive models with agentic AI tools, we are enabling real-time identification of potential risks, automating complex investigation and documentation workflows, and supporting faster interventions before issues impact quality or production." he said.
These capabilities are helping strengthen manufacturing performance, improve quality oversight and accelerate product release timelines across Lupin's network of manufacturing plants.
The company's Commercial ecosystem is also undergoing "significant transformation", with AI and digital tools enhancing field-force effectiveness, customer engagement, planning and decision-making. At the same time, AI is increasingly being applied across research and clinical development to augment scientific productivity, while advanced analytics is helping in optimising supply chain planning and responsiveness.
"Over the next 12 to 24 months, our focus will be on scaling these initiatives across our global footprint and translating them into measurable, compounding business outcomes. We expect this to include further reductions in batch-release turnaround times, shorter supply chain lead times, lower working-capital buffers and stronger global regulatory inspection readiness through increasingly automated compliance frameworks," said Swaminathan.
